![]() I did win class 7A autox on the Patriot course at VIR that year against a bunch of other E39, E34 and E28 M5s. I'm sure I'll miss it when a car like mine is changing hands for $150k.īMWCCA O'fest 2005 at VIR below: wonderful time, the M5 in that timeframe was a beast on track at VIR mainly due to straightaway speed capabilities. ![]() However, even with all my mods it wasn't a great agile corner carver, but it was great for a car of its weight and design purpose.if you drive it like a gentlemen's express and not a track weapon, then all is fantastic. If I had to go on a 500 mile trip right now, the M5 would be the choice without question. In terms of aggressive driving enjoyment, track/time trial/autocross events, etc, the dynamics of the E90 M3 and M2C are a lot more fun than the E39 M5, but of course the M5 wasn't designed for the market niche those two cars fill at all. ![]() It's coming up on three years since I sold mine on BaT, and while I really enjoyed the M5 for 15 years and did everything I ever wanted to with it, I really haven't missed it (yet). In this episode Magnus drives the E39 BMW M5 to find out why this sleeper sedan seems to be attracting so much attention from enthusiasts. But for occasional use the E60 has been a fun car with an entirely different personality with the motor that makes no power until 4500 and then screams up to 8K - very different from a S62!įrom the recent BaT auctions, it appears we're well immersed in the 2nd big appreciation wave of E39 M5s. In this new series, Magnus Walker explores the cars that could be the future classics. If I was daily driving a sedan, the E39 M5 would still be my top choice - although the F80 M3 sedan is pretty good now and just about the same size - just a lot more money. There isn't another sedan I would want other than a S2 E39 M5, honestly.īut I keep having thoughts of swapping mine for a C6-Z06, another last of breed big NA motor, race inspired car. I haven't owned that one as long as the E39's by any stretch, but it's a fantastic continuation of the platform - still very analog just a few improvements here and there to the chassis and then of course the V10 - last of a breed of NA M-motors for sure. But sold it just before the pandemic closed up the world and ended up finding a 65K mile 2008 M5 with 6MT. I replaced it with a Panamera S, which was a good choice for a few years when I was constantly on the road between the Bay Area and central coast of CA - made for a fantastic road trip car. Current owner is a car guy and really enjoying it - we are still in touch from time to time. 1 2 The series follows Lily Woodward, a producer on a morning television show, and what happens when life, love and friendships collide. I sold my second one 3 years ago after owning it 6 years - Imola 2003.
